Toys R Us Testing Special Needs Accommodations

As the holiday season approaches, a national retailer is exploring ways to make shopping more friendly for kids with special needs and their families.

Toys R Us said it is offering “quiet” shopping opportunities designed to cater to those with disabilities at some stores and could make the offering available on a wider scale.

“We’re working on a plan to test these types of opportunities on a local level — pairing our stores with local organizations to create an event for kids with special needs and their families, and will also assess opportunities to scale it nationally,” Candace Disler, a Toys R Us spokeswoman, told Disability Scoop.

Decisions about whether to offer special shopping experiences at each of Toys R Us’ 900 stores are being made on a “case-by-case basis,” Disler said.

Likewise, the specifics of the offering may vary from one location to the next.

Disler indicated that if quiet hours are made available nationally, the retailer would want it to be “done with care and done well.”
