4 Day School Week
March 11, 2010
Southland Public Schools in Minnesota are looking to cut back on school days to save some money. Teachers are doing the research and discussing with parents, the benefits of a four-day week.
Superintendent Steve Sallee says they are still looking into the proposal. "The school board was impressed with the presentation and gave us the directive to research further."
One less day means money isn’t being spent on the school’s 10 bus routes. It’s their biggest money saver
But one concern parents and school members are discussing is how activities will fit into the possible schedule. “That is definitely one of the drawbacks to this is the students are in school later in the day and practices go later at night."
It’s a concern student athletes are worrying about. Student Brock Bendtsen, is asking if a day off from school is also a day off from sports. “I wouldn’t like going back for sports after being home all day."
The school district is holding several meetings to get feedback from members of the community. They are tonight at 6:30 in Adams and tomorrow night at 6:30 in the Dexter Community Center.
