Charter Schools Statewide Also Hurt by Education Cuts (OH)

May 11, 2010

Cuts, cuts, cuts. That word has been everywhere ever since the state of Idaho cut school funding, once again.

However, one thing many people don’t realize is that charter schools are affected just as bad as public schools.

"We are getting hit with the same cuts that every public schools is getting," Dr. Martha Martin, Dean of Pocatello Community Charter School said.

Even though PCCS opened their doors in 1999, but have been faced with financial struggles much longer than other schools in the state.

Martin said, even though the charter school has struggled financially, they don’t have any intentions of cutting staff.

She said, "I can’t imagine we’d cut positions, it seems like we’re pretty stretched as it is, many people wear many hats."

In addition to wearing many hats, the charter school strictly enforces attendance.

"The short story is we get funded on daily attendance average. So for all you parents out there, that’s why school get crazy when you do things like go to Disneyland in the middle of the school year. We need kids in the classroom, in their seats, that’s how we get funded," she added.

But now as they look at ways to keep a balanced budget, Martin said the education cuts hurt all districts and c harter schools alike.

Martin said, "All of these issues are really complicated. I think that with schools funding cut, it has been a total outrage. Everybody in this community and everybody in the state of Idaho should be really angry about it."
