February 15, 2010

Harding University issued the following news release:

Upon receiving full recognition from the Council for Exceptional Children, the Master of Education in Early Childhood Special Education program in the Cannon-Clary College of Education at Harding University continues to meet Arkansas requirements to offer licensure within the state.

Arkansas requires that institutions of higher education be fully recognized by specialized professional associations (SPAs), such as CEC, in order to offer teacher licensure programs. All of the SPA-accredited programs offered at Harding have been fully recognized.

The College of Education began offering programs in special education in 1973 and has been required to meet CEC standards since. This year, the program met all ten of the CEC’s requirements and received no suggested areas of improvement.

"The goal for Harding University teacher candidates in the early childhood special education program is to ensure they acquire the knowledge and develop the skills needed for all entry level special education teachers of students in early childhood as espoused by the CEC," said Dr. Jan Morgan, director of special education at Harding.

The SPA programs recognized include the areas of foreign language, special education, educational leadership, reading, early childhood, social science, English, math, middle level education, and science.

The program review was written by Dr. Jan Morgan, chai r of teacher education and director of special education, and Dr. Carol Douglass, associate professor of special education.

The Master of Special Education program enrollment has more than doubled in the past three years as it continues to offer more courses online.

The CEC is the largest international professional organization focused on the improvement of educational success of individuals with disabilities and/or gifts and talents.
