Jackson City Schools To Receive $133,000

December 16, 2009

Praising more federal dollars heading to Ohio’s 18th Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Zack Space today announced $113,107 to retrofit 19 school buses for Jackson City Schools. The funding was awarded to individual school districts under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which Space supported earlier this year.

Retrofitting school buses reduces fine particle pollution in diesel exhaust, which can lodge deeply in the lungs and aggravate respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. Children are most susceptible to this kind of air pollution because their lungs and respiratory systems are still developing.

"With this funding, we are creating jobs and ensuring that our children stay healthy," Space said. "Protecting the health of our children is and should be one of our top priorities."

The retrofitting reduces the fine particle pollution in diesel exhaust by between 20 and 90 percent, depending on the type of control equipment installed. The funding is part of $1.87 million in grants given to 31 school districts to install equipment on 528 school buses.

Congressman Space has served Ohio’s 18th Congressional District since 2007. He is working to restore integrity to the office, and create the conditions to bring new jobs and industry to Ohio.
