RI Finance Chair Makes School Funding Proposal (RI)

The chairman of the House Finance Committee has introduced his own bill to change the way the state distributes hundreds of millions of dollars to local school districts.

Rep. Steven Costantino submitted legislation Wednesday afternoon that mirrors the proposal drafted by the state Department of Education in February.

The Providence Democrat calls his bill "a work in progress."

Costantino’s bill and at least two others are scheduled for a public hearing on May 13 before the House Finance Committee.

House Speaker Gordon Fox has said the passage of a formula is a priority this year.
